PR033: Aphir – Negative Space

“We live in a world where the resources exist to ensure no one has to be afraid of not having enough food or a roof over their heads but, instead, wealth is largely concentrated in the possession of a handful of billionaires, and diverted by governments into military budgets”

Aphir’s new single picks up where her 2020 LP Republic of Paradise left off, using the language of mythology to process injustices the pandemic has thrown into relief. She says:

“The welfare payments that were introduced during the pandemic lockdowns in Australia were a tacit acknowledgement that the barriers that prevent people from working can be entirely circumstantial, and that all people deserve to have their basic needs met, regardless of their capacity to work.

We live in a world where the resources exist to ensure no one has to be afraid of not having enough food or a roof over their heads but, instead, wealth is largely concentrated in the possession of a handful of billionaires, and diverted by governments into military budgets.

Negative Space condenses the anger and frustration I feel about this into a three-minute pop song. It’s an anger that intensifies as I see how starkly these systems stand in contrast with the kindness and ingenuity that humanity is capable of.”

Where Republic of Paradise drew on experimental song structures and chant-like vocal deliveries, Negative Space sits more comfortably in the pop world, albeit with a darker textural palette.
